LORENZO DE MEDICI
Lorenzo de’ Medici — from the “XXY – de’ Medici” series
Saul Zanolari
Gold leaf and acrylic, engraved on wood panel, 50×50 cm (2025)
This artwork by Saul Zanolari is inspired by Lorenzo de’ Medici, “Il Magnifico”, emblem of power, patronage, and the birth of modern identity. The work is part of the XXY – de’ Medici series, exhibited in 2025 at the Museo de’ Medici in Florence, where part of the collection was officially donated — confirming its cultural and artistic relevance.
Zanolari reduces the portrait to its essential symbols: the eyes disappear, replaced by XY chromosomes, transforming individuality into a universal sign. The use of gold leaf evokes wealth, authority, and legacy, while minimal red body marks introduce a subtle tension between ego, representation, and desire. The result is a striking balance between historical iconography and contemporary visual language.
This panel represents one side of an open sculptural cube dedicated to Lorenzo de’ Medici. Acquiring the complete cube (4 panels) enhances both conceptual and collectible value and is offered at a more advantageous price compared to purchasing individual panels — an opportunity designed for discerning collectors.
A powerful fusion of history, minimalism, and contemporary art.
